Capturing the Visual Traces of Historical Change: The Internet Mission Photography Archive
Scholars from many disciplines in the humanities and social sciences
are paying attention to the visual record that marks the expansion of
Western influence around the world in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Material artifacts, technology, art, and photographs add a distinct
category of information to what can be learned from the more familiar
text-based archives that have long been the primary sources for studying
the period. When it comes to historical photographs in particular, the
archives of Christian overseas missionary societies are especially
important. However the impact of these religious organizations is
estimated, the fact is that for well over a century, they represented
the international face of one of the largest and most ambitious social
movements in Europe and North America.
